Button 11/8 for three wins on the bounce
Are the Brawn GP team in danger of making the 2009 Formula 1 season uncompetitive? It’s still early days, although the FIA ruling that Jenson Button’s car is legal means that the Brit is just 11/8 (Boylesports) to take the chequered flag yet again when the cars take to the grid in Shanghai. His team-mate Rubens Barrichello is 5/1 second favourite (Blue Square) to win Sunday’s race, with some bookmakers actually starting to offer betting on the race without the Brawn drivers. Coral, Ladbrokes and Skybet all make Sebastian Vettel the favourite at 5/1.
It appears as though it might be a few more weeks before we see the Ferrari cars competing for podium positions. Although the Prancing Horse is a 3/1 chance to take the Constructors Championship this season, Kimi Raikkonen is as big as 18/1 (Centrebet) to take maximum points in China, while Felipe Massa is even bigger at 20/1 (William Hill). The Italian team haven’t started this badly since 1992, although their protest against Button’s car suggests they are searching for other teams’ weaknesses rather than concentrating on their strengths.
Judging from the first two races of 2009, it’s the Toyota cars that might give Button and Barrichello most to think about. Jarno Trulli recovered from 19th place on the grid to land a podium place in Melbourne and he therefore looks an attractive each-way proposition at 16/1 (Betfred). His team-mate Timo Glock (20/1 Paddy Power) pipped him in Sepang, although the aborted race means we shouldn’t read too much into this outcome.
In addition to the Race Winner market, you can also bet on any driver to finish in the points. It’s amazing to find a Ferrari driver at 5/6 (bet365) for a top eight finish, but whether you rate Massa to do this is another matter. Skybet offer a stand-out even money that Mark Webber obliges in his Red Bull car, with Nico Rosberg attractively priced at 4/6 with Sportingbet, especially as the German is a 4/9 chance with Blue Square.
