Knysna Hillclimb revs into town

In a bid to attract a new set of visitors to town, Knysna Tourism recently announced that the first known motorsport hillclimb event in Knysna will take place over the weekend of October 30.
The Knysna Hillclimb will be held on a 1. 85km section of road running up to the acclaimed Simola Estate and Golf Course and will include four categories: classic cars, road going cars, race cars and turbo or supercharged cars.
Early entries include wonderful models, such as a 1939 Lagonda Le Mans racer, Ford GT40s, Chevron B19, Lotus 23, Jaguar E-Type, and a Lotus 7. Many members from the Porsche, Ferrari and Bentley clubs are also taking part.
A voluntary drive through Knysna at 1pm will kick off this exciting event on Friday October 30. It will be followed by a public viewing of the cars at The Moorings during the afternoon. Entrants will be officially welcomed to Knysna at a cocktail function that same evening. The Ferrari Club / Sela Brokers has sponsored a floating trophy to be presented to the winners at an official dinner held after the event.
Practice and qualifying runs will be held on Saturday and Sunday morning, before the finals on Sunday afternoon. The competition will take the form of a time trial, with singular competitors in each class starting the climb at one minute intervals. Track activity will be from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 10am to 2.:45pm on Sunday.
Held under the auspices of Motorsport SA, Algoa Kart Club is the official organisers and most of the on-the-ground organisation will be conducted by the Knysna Hillclimb organising committee. Transponder timing will be provided, and marshals recruited from the local community and medical services will be on duty.
From the interest and enthusiasm shown from the various role players, the organisers are confident that the event will become an annual one, and that it can be developed with additional events to create a ‘Speed Festival’. The goal of this event is not only to attract more visitors to Knysna, but also to contribute to various local charities as proceeds will be donated to charity.
Knysna Tourism CEO Shaun van Eck said: “The Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival has proven time and again how valuable festivals and events are to our local economy. We look forward to this exciting event and to welcoming the new set of visitors it will surely bring to our beautiful town.”
