This means the margin for negotiating a deal in the showroom is smaller, but the lower sticker price you see will be closer to the price you pay.

Ford of Britain managing director Nigel Sharp says: 'Ford's tradi t ional high- di scount approach was causing confusion. That formula served us well in the past, but today's consumers shop around.

'So we have to make it clear that dealers are the best place to go for the keenest prices.'

Bikers are finally emerging into the spring sunlight.

And for 99, the world's fastest-growing motorcycle marque, Britain's own Triumph, is offering riders the chance to try its awesome Daytona 675 at Silverstone racetrack on June 7, July 19, September 6, or at Castle Combe on August 10.

Triumph, now making 50,000 machines a year, calls the five-hour track session 'the perfect opportunity for riders to develop their skills within a closed environment'.

You will need to have held a full bike licence for a year and have leathers and approved race wear. Full details are on triumphmotorcycles.com.

The Budget contained some good and bad news for company car drivers: from next week those who drive a car with ultra-low Co2 emissions  -  of below 75g per kilometre  -  will see their tax halved.

The bad news is that no such cars exist. Car manufacturers, accountants and even the government's website point out that the lowest-emitting non-electric cars on the market  -  including the Smart ForTwo (88g/ km), Toyota Prius and Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion (both 89g/km) and the Ford Fiesta (98g/km)  -  will not qualify.

Mike Moore, director of employment taxes at Deloitte, said: 'Excepting electric cars there are no cars available with emissions anywhere near 75g/km.'

The government has set this new limit as an 'incentive'. If a 75g/km car did exist, a basic rate taxpayer with one as a company car worth 10,000 would pay just 100 company car tax per year.

The same basic-rate taxpayer driving a petrol Ford Ka three-door hatch with a list price of 10,000 and Co2 emissions of 119g/km pays 200 company car tax per year.

Electric cars are already exempt from company car tax.
