Gianmaria Bruni (AF Corse) and Anthony Kumpen (PK Carsport) took pole positions for tomorrow’s FIA GT finale at the Zolder circuit in Belgium. The Ferrari and Corvette drivers beat their class rivals on a dry track this afternoon.

At 5.15 pm the green flag was shown for the GT2 cars and most cars went out as soon as possibly. Bergmeister in the Trackspeed Porsche and Bruni in the AF Corse Ferrari were quickest at the start of the session and traded places in the opening minutes.

A couple of strong laps put Bergmeister in provisional pole position and he remained there until just over the halfway point of the session with a fastest time of 1:31.831.

Championship contender Gianmaria Bruni started another flying lap eight minutes into the session and stopped the clocks at 1:31.622 at the end of his lap. While Richard Westbrook meanwhile moved his ProSpeed Porsche into third place Jörg Bergmeister was unable to beat Bruni’s time and the German went into parc fermé a few minutes before the end of the session. When Barba Lopez went off at turn 1 and yellow flags came out the session was effectively over and Bruni had secured his fourth pole of the 2009 season.

Five minutes after the end of the GT2 session it was time for the GT1 cars. Anthony Kumpen had a rather unfortunate start when he briefly came to a halt at turn 2. Three minutes into the session Maassen was the first driver on provisional pole but the Dutchman was immediately pushed down the order by Alex Pier Guidi in the #33 Maserati MC12.

Bert Longin then went off into the gravel, causing a yellow flag area, but this did not prevent Bernoldi from setting the fastest lap, a 1:28.026. Two minutes later the track went green again and almost immediately it was Kumpen who started to set fast sector times. Seven minutes into the session the Belgian driver posted a 1:27.399 and took provisional pole. Andrea Bertolini tried to catch the Corvette but when the #1 Maserati went through the gravel it seemed a lost cause for the Italian.

Kumpen had done everything he could and came back into parc fermé with five minutes left on the clock. But in those remaining five minutes none of the other drivers was able to improve Kumpen’s provisional pole time and when the chequered flag came out Kumpen had secured his first pole of the season.
