The organizers of the A1 GP series have announced the cancellation of the season-opening event in Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise, Quensland). It was supposed to be first round of the fifth season and it was scheduled to take place from October 22nd till October 25th.
The reason behind the cancellation is a logistical problem. Apparently, the FIA recently told the holding company of the series, A1 Holdings, to undertake two safety-related modifications to their Ferrari race cars. Unfortunately, they are not able to complete both modifications in time.
Hence the company is unable to ship the cars to Australia in time for the race. There is no word about being able to make it for the next race in China that is expected take place on November 15th.
Chairman of the series, Tony Teixeira said “I want to personally apologise to the people affected by this regrettable but unavoidable decision.” He concluded by saying, “A1GP may be down, but I do not accept we are out. We have had four exciting seasons that have proved we are a force in the sport and now we shall consolidate on what we have achieved to date. My efforts will be on finding a way forward with the support of some very loyal people.”
