The Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance announced the winners for Saturday's Car Club Jamboree, held as part of the three-day Concours events. The top Car Club honor, the "Best of Show" was given to a 1967 Ferrari owned by Reinhold Preik.
The "People's Choice Award" was given to a 1958 Porsche 356A Speedster owned by Ray Morgan, and the Chairman's Award went to a 1950 Chrysler Town & Country Woodie Wagon owned by Aiken Ryan.
Bill Schmitt, President of the Hilton Head Corvette Club, served as the manager of Car Club Jamboree. Schmitt was joined by Gary Henderson and Truitt Rabun to produce the event. The Car Club Jamboree is designed around Car Clubs and Schmitt said they strive to emphasize the fun of the car collector hobby.
"We try each year to expand our outreach, club-wise, to include as much of the Southeast as possible," Schmitt said. "We have clubs from North Carolina - AACA - Western NC and members of the Mercedes Benz Clubs. We had people from the Atlanta area such as the Peach State Cadillac Lasalle Club and members of the Jaguar Clubs. The Ferrari Club was mainly the South Carolina Chapter but they had Florida people join them. The Mini Club people came from SC, GA, FL & VA. Within the State (SC), Charleston was well represented by the British Car Club of Charleston and Street Rods Unlimited."
The geographic focus of the show changes each year, Schmitt noted, "Each year we have a focus on one European country's cars. This year was Britain. Next year will be Germany and then Italy the year after. We are trying to bring together a broad spectrum of clubs to make it interesting for everyone, the exhibitors and the public. Most car shows tend not to have a broad spectrum and focus on certain types of cars - Hot Rods, European, etc.," he noted.
Schmitt said the Car Club Jamboree had its largest field since they started with the Car Club Jamboree focus four years ago. "We continue to try to expand our Regional outreach and our variety each year. Hilton Head (Concours d'Elegance) is unique in our Motoring Festival concept - the "Four Glorious Events - One Incredible Destination". Built around the cornerstone of the Concours d'Elegance, we add the Historics (vintage racing), the Motoring Midway and the Car Club Jamboree. "
He pointed out that a large part of the Mission is focused on education about the history of the automobile, especially directed towards the Youth of America. The Concours focuses on the "classics" - thirty years old and older. The Jamboree focuses on the "hobby" of restoring and using these cars. The Historics focuses on the joy of racing old cars and the Motoring Midway on telling a story, like this year's "Life on the Road" or the look into the future with electirc, hybrid and fuel cell cars.
Dennis Gage of the SPEED Channel’s My Classic Car was on-site filming the Concours d'Elegance Savannah/Hilton Head Speed Classic track events on Savannah’s Hutchinson Island for his 2010 season. On Saturday he mingled with car enthusiasts at the Car Club Jamboree and commented on the Car Club component of the Concours d'Elegance. "I really like this event. I love that it is a multi-faceted extravaganza," he said. He said he likes that "there is vintage racing on a cool track (Hutchinson Island) and folks can bring their cars to the Car Club Jamboree" as part of the Concours.
