Testing is still going on at this time and so far there have been two red flags, one for Lotus reserve driver Fairuz Fauzy and the other for the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso. Both cars stopped on track with failures rather than accidents, which isn’t good news especially for world championship favourite Fernando Alonso who said yesterday that the Ferrari is the best car he has driven.
As for who is fastest, not all runners have gone round yet to set a competitive time but, Nico Hulkenerg driving for Williams set a time of one minute 22.684 seconds. The Red Bull of Mark Webber is second (1:23.335) with Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes in third (1:23.209).
Testing will finish in four days time before the season begins on the 14th march in Bahrain. All the team will be looking to get all there aerodynamic tweaks, and updates ready and working before then.
Don’t forget the new rules say there will be no refueling during a race so it will be interesting to see if this will have any effect in the way of overtaking. The aim of the rule was to try and eliminate fuel strategies playing a part in deciding results rather than drivers having to pass anyone.
Of course everyone is still wondering whether all the teams will make it to the grid, it is looking glum for USF1 who are still hoping the FIA F1’s governing body will let them miss the opening race due to them not having the resources to take part in the entire race calendar. Lotus F1 are looking O.K with not bad pace, apart from crashing in testing they should be a team capable of scoring a hand full of points, as long as Kovalainen has ironed out his performance woes that plagued him at McLaren.
The bookmakers don’t think that any of the new teams will make an impression, Kovalainen the best placed driver at 94/1 for most race wins. Favourite at the moment is Alonso at 257/100. Seven time world champions Michael Schumacher is 49/10 to win the most races of 2010. Odds from Betfair, correct at time of writing and subject to change
