R.I.P. GIDGET: CELEBRITY DOG OF TACO BELL FAME DIES IN 2009
Gidget, the dog of Taco Bell fame, was loved by the American TV audience, her trainers, and her owners. NBC Television News is reporting that Gidget, the original Chihuahua mascot for the Taco Bell ad campaigns, died from a stroke on Tuesday night at the age of 15.
Made a celebrity by the "Yo! Quiero Taco Bell?" commercials, the perky pup lived a good star life.
Her trainer, Sue Chipperton, sorrowfully said, "She made so many people happy." Talking about the pet's off camera temperament, she offered, "When she's on a set, she comes alive," Chipperton said. Like so many other pampered pets across the world and especially here in the USA, Gidget was "happy to sleep for 23 hours and 45 minutes a day."

PAMPERED PETS WHO TRAVEL ULTRA-LUXE TO ALL THE EXOTIC PLACES THEY GO
Small dogs have been in celebrity and pet travel news for many years now, with travelers dating as far back as through the Chinese and Japanese aristocracy and emperors choosing to keep tiny hounds as companion pets to their oftentimes amusing and quirky natures, the ease in which they can be picked up due to their light weight, and "pet portability" -- the ability to travel easily while leaving limited mess to clean up no matter where a pet owner is visiting.
LuxuryLaunches.com writer Deepa did another celebrity dog bio (with tounge in cheek) journalism piece about another famous chihuahua in the news (see photo top right). The author says,
Thank god, my pet dogs cannot read and so they will never come across this bit for pampered news. Or else they’d sue me for not offering them even a fraction of all these luxurious comforts that Conchita (a Chihuahua known to her family as The Boss) is getting.
Conchita’s owner, socialite Gail Posner, is the daughter of a billionaire businessman, spends £7,000 a month on Louis Vuitton bags, bikinis, pearls, dresses and make-up for her. She has her own special pink racing car bed, bathroom and TV, and lunches daily on fresh grilled chicken breast at the exclusive Shore Club in Miami.
At dinner time she snubs Ms. Posner's two other dogs and eats on a king's chair in the TV room away from them. And the posh pooch refuses to go to bed until she is wearing either her blue or pink cashmere sweater. With weekly manicures, her own minder and publicist, this one-year-old 500g (1lb) Chihuahua is living the dog life equivalent of Paris Hilton’s existence. Ouch, did that hurt Paris’s ego? Conchita is also gearing up for US TV chat show appearances!
PARIS HILTON: FAMOUS CARS, FAMOUS POOCH
Paris Hilton, trust fund heiress to the Hilton Hotel fortune and exotic car owner regularly travels with her small pet, another chihuahua most of us already know is named Tinkerbell.
Recently, the American Hilton made exotic and luxury auto news by designing her girlhood dream car, a "Barbie Pink" Bentley continental GT. The garish but nostalgic Barbie pink color made to custom order helped Hilton design what may just be the most unique and expensive Barbie car in history.
Speaking to E! Online about her new ride Paris, dressed all in pink, said, "I've just always wanted a pink car. I think when you're a little girl and you have the Barbie corvette you're always like, 'Oh I wish I had a car like this one day,' so I think it just comes from being a fan of Barbie for so long."
The Bentley Continental GT came custom car complete with diamond crusted dash, pink custom wheels, pink paint, and a pink and black interior, she regularly brings her little dog Tink for a ride.
Is the car incredibly outlandish, Pepto Bismol pink, and wildly girlie? Absolutely. But if self proclaimed couture fashion and handbag designer and perfume creator Paris says she likes it, she likes it -- a paparazzi world wide are happy to snap pics of the glam car for us (like the pics of the Barbie Bentley Continental GT shown here).
TIPS FOR TRAVEL BY CAR WITH PETS
Barty (photo right) -- a blue marle Chihuahua stud -- is a typical pet familiar with exotic car travel. He's laid back, loves to ride, and while taking charge in asking for attention and dictating when it's time to stop somewhere for a roadside attraction or quick walk is otherwise happy to have his driver chauffeur decide the rest of the travel opportunities and destinations.
Keeping a pet properly harnessed or contained in a car space for their own safety in any road trip situation (short or long) is important. It's also a common sense rule that a dog (large or small) should never be lose in a car where they could accidentally interfere with a driver operator's steering, sight, shifting, braking, or accelerating.
Smart owners of two seater cars will oftentimes harness their furry friends in the passenger seat, rather than allowing a dog to sit in their lap. If the car is a convertible, then the animal can have all the fun of playing with wind; if not, keeping a window on or appropriate temperature air vent aimed in the direction of the animals face can still provide them with a worthwhile outing and pleasurable sensation trip. If traveling as a couple with a pet in tow, small dogs in carriers can ride on the passenger side floor. [Personally, we bring our smallest pup by Pucci pet carrier, as she loves road trips and the people we meet wherever we go.]
Drivers of 2+2 sports cars or high line luxury models with back seats or rear cargo spaces have more options of where to safely place a pet for travel in the car. Safety harnesses can be purchased or custom made to allow pets to have safe rides and a better view. For example, one of our favorite Ferrari driver friends loves his pet so much that he actually had a custom sheep wool fleece platform travel bed with secure pet harness crafted for his pampered pooch to ride in the back of his 456 Ferrari where he can still reach his pup for calming heavy petting purposes while on the road-- raising the dog high enough that she can still see out the window without needing to stand or be mobile.
Never leave a pet or even a small child in a parked car with closed windows, and always keep fresh water accessible on any car trip. Though this word of advice ought to be common sense, apparently it's not; many pet and child deaths occur each year due to hot cars that, in the right summer sun conditions, can bring the inside of a locked and closed cars well above 115 degrees in a matter of minutes. Be kind and don't overheat or dehydrate yourself, your family, or your pets.
