Enzo Ferrari had boyhood ambitions to be a singer or writer
Enzo Ferrari is one of the most widely respected names in the automobile industry -- but he did not always want to be involved with the sale and production of cars. Born in the year 1898, Ferrari's early childhood years were lived before the rise in popularity of automobiles. Yes, while it is true that his family had the first car in their home town of Modena, Italy -- and that Ferrari did show signs of passion for racing and engineering at a young age, the young boy Enzo Ferrari had other ideas about what he wanted to be when he grew up -- that is until at the age of 10 he saw his first car race.
ENZO FERRARI AS A CHILD
Enzo Ferrari had two ambitions when he was a very young child growing up -- and they did not exclusively involve the anything related to the automobile business.
His father owned a metal business, and in 1908 took his son to see his first car race -- the Circuit di Bologna. With cars being an up and coming novelty product that would undoubtedly require metal to produce, thereby making the race a noteworthy event to attend, it also provided a fun opportunity to spend some quality time at the track with his son.
Once young Enzo saw the cars, he became obsessed -- knowing from the age of 10 forward that he wanted to be a professional race car driver and eventually an auto builder. However, prior to that time, he had other ideas -- both tied tangentially to fame, but neither panning out to be as lucrative as working full time in the boutique high performance auto business.
WHAT DID ENZO FERRARI WANT TO BE WHEN HE GREW UP
Ferrari's fist desire was to become a singer. However, being tone deaf proved to halt the young crooners ambition to become a celebrity in the music world.
Ferrari's second ambition was to become a journalist. Aspiring to write professionally was a goal Enzo Ferrari partially fulfilled.
FERRARI AMBITION: SUCCESS
It's a little known fact that Enzo Ferrari himself actually wrote the newsletters and announcements for his Scuderia Ferrari starting in 1929. He issued annual bulletins and penned many subsequent publications about his organization's progress professionally and technically.
Ferrari did not use a ghost writer for these early forays into creating media kits and promotional press until much later.
From the time he set up his own automotive factory (in 1946), he focused on building racing and Gran Turismo (touring) cars. Most authorship duties fell to other writers who generated approved content to help market the brand.
ENZO FERRARI PRESS CONFERENCES
Knowing his car products were destined to be special, Ferrari did hold his own press conferences each year, and invited all the leading automotive journalists of the day to document his story and spoken words for historical documentation and business building purposes. Though not all the reviews were favorable, they still met his purpose -- with the name FERRARI being forever associated with racing and automobiles and familiar in every household who appreciates car culture.
