If you are an automobile fan and have a love of exotics, you have probably already heard the latest tragic but fascinating celebrity car crash story relating to Nicholas Cage and the Ferrari F430 wreck during a movie scene being filmed in New York City. Happening this week during a filming of the latest Walt Disney movie the "Sorcerers Apprentice", the New York Post quickly reported the incident.

The storyline reported by multiple news media sources goes something like this:

Car scene. Stunt driver. Ferrari F430 loses control, crashes into lightpole. Lightpole falls (to the probable chagrin of the electric company and any neighbors or neighborhood businesses who may have suffered temporary power outages). Pole falls (obviously, as gravity tends to dictate they will do when hit sufficiently hard enough to knock them over). Two people suffer injuries  -- not harmed by the car crashing into civilians but rather from the light falling and related debris flying. No serious injuries reported but headlines read Ferrari hits and injures bystanders.

If you love a Ferrari and understand the cars history and heritage (including limited production numbers and numbered collector status on each of them), such a story always brings with it an accompanying level of wince.

The F430 model, new and in mint condition, has a an average price tag of $220,000 for the coupe and a spider $252,000 (moderately equipped). Ferrari produces roughly 6,500 automobiles worldwide annually (the number of cars made by hand on the production lines each year).

The Ferrari, as a personally owned high performance and luxury car,  is a boutique automobile that can be built in any color or equipment combination that the customer would like, making each car as unique as the individual who orders it. Residents of most major metropolitan areas in the United States typically have access to shop for these specialty automobiles at over 35 factory authorized dealerships nationwide.

Related to the model and serial numbers, each car has a limited production model in each series, and very few cars are ordered exactly the same. However, any Scuderia red and tan combination on a Ferrari car is traditional and preferred by many, having been the signet colors for the brand for well over half a century.

One does not have to be limited to the ordinary Ferrari colors though, as the full spectrum of color is available and ready. In spec building out your favorite Ferrari, the ability to design a Ferrari reflects and requires an artist's eye.  Comfort features and color combination packages (with custom seats and interiors, exterior paint colors that can be made to match any variety of hue chip, and a wide assortment of preformance and handling options such as transmission or sport wheel suspensions) are arranged as paint from a pallatte can be applied to a canvas by a master.

CELEBRITY CAR CRASHES MAKE BIG NEWS -- ESPECIALLY WHEN THE CAR WRECK INVOLVES A FERRARI

In the case of the fast driving, reckless, and out of control Ferrari F430 on the Nicholas Cage movie scene set in NYC, the car was a chic black model. [Very trendy in an upscale urban crowded metro cafe car chase scene.] I guess the silver Merceded involved in the chase got the better end of the race that day.

Speaking of celebrity style, each owner of a Ferrari car is a star when it comes to having their needs and luxury high performance racing supercar automotive desires met by the brand representatives. It's up to each future owner to design their own Monet, Van Gogh, Davinci, or Rembrant that reflects their personal tastes; pre-owned exotic car buyers are often know to purchase special models of car for far more than was paid for the car at initial MSRP.

When it comes to Ferrari, time -- along with care taking and rarity -- increase the value of the automobile. For these reasons, seeing a wreck of a Ferrari (even when it is all in the name of making a great movie) is still a tragedy in motorsports history.
