50 cars for 50 states - California Dreamin', the Tesla Roadster

The All Electric Tesla Motors Roadster

Let me start off by saying that choosing a single car that represents California is nearly impossible.  The state is so diverse, that maybe we could call it; Tesla Roadster, The Southern Californian Ideal?

The gist is that choosing a single car to represent a state is difficult enough and when it came time to look around California, the choice is daunting.  BMWs crowd every street corner, Mercedes are the preferred vehicle for Newport Beach, while the rugged interior thrives on pick up trucks and San Francisco has its Prius affaire.  Highways are filled with SUVs drowning in a sea of look alike cars.  Yet, when we picture California, roadster with tops down is what comes up.

California Skunkworks.  What it all boils down to is that California is the skunkwork, secret hidden away labs of the car industry.  From GM to Porsche, every car maker has a neatly tucked away garage where a engineers test new concepts.  In this instance, the Tesla Roadster is the epitome of California.  It is a Silicon Valley brainchild, a technology fantasy turned real.  It is wholesome, it uses electrons to propel itself and it had to be a convertible with enough oomph to satisfy even the most blase.  Next to it, would a Ferrari California Spider do?

California Dreamin'.  The electric vehicle, EV poster child Tesla Roadster probably comes to mind when we think of an electric car.  Even though the Roadster is not the most affordable car for the majority of consumers, it captures what California should be all about, clean, natural top down fun on the road.  Maybe this is why it has attracted as much positive and negative reviews.  The Roadster should be looked in a different light than a regular EV.  It is in the same stratosphere as Porsche and Ferrari, at times beating out the old winners.

In many ways, the Tesla Roadster is the quintessential Southern California car.  It is sleek, convertible, has a lot of performance to offer and is greener than traditional exotics.  Going to a Tesla Motor store is like technology shopping on wheel.  The garage behind the shops is so clean you would not think twice letting your two year old crawl around.  Walking in is akin to an Apple shop experience with friendly helpers and dedicated knowledgeable staff.  While California is home to gigantic SUVs, loud pickup trucks, exotic and hybrid cars, the Roadster probably represents best this southern part of the state.

So when it comes to it, the Tesla Roadster is the ones that represents this part of the state.  Its technological background, its aspiration to alternative energy and lifestyle, with its ingrained car culture makes it the perfect cadidate.
