Formula 1 – Australian GP Start Time Concerns Drivers

Posted on March 23, 2010 by Harry

Many Formula 1 drivers who drove at Melbourne, Australia last year, they stated that the swift of the race’s start time to be more appropriate for the European spectators can be dangerous for the drivers. Jenson Button who was last year’s winner, clearly stated that when the race will be close to completion the sun will be directly opposite of drivers’ eyes, a fact that can be extremely dangerous if slower cars are in front of the way. However, the 2009 Formula 1 Champion said also that despite the dangers the sunset time might produce, he prefers to run at day time instead night time races.

To the track level, Button believes that McLaren can challenge for a place on the podium despite that Red Bull and Ferrari seem to have stronger engines as this track requires less down force which meets the capabilities of the car.

His team mate Lewis Hamilton hopes to repeat the victory he achieved at Albert Park back at 2008. Hamilton who managed to secure the third spot at Bahrain stated that the car had the potential for a better result. However, he stated, even the third spot was a good one as Bahrain was the first race of the season.

Most of the teams are already at Melbourne for the initial race preparations. It would be interesting to see if Williams and Force India can achieve better results than the opening race and if Red Bull combines fast pace with car reliability. Ferrari is the only team that can be more relaxed due to the 1-2 result back at Bahrain but this can be a test for them as well.

The race will start at 17:00 local time (07:00 GMT) and more than 80,000 spectators are expected to travel all the way to Albert Park for this event. Let us remind you that Fernando Alonso leads the standings with 25 points, followed by his team mate Felipe Massa with 18. Third is Lewis Hamilton with 15 points while the man who was the pole position at Bahrain, Sebastian Vettel is fourth with 12 points. Nico Rosberg with 10 and Michael Schumacher with 8 follow behind while Button (6), Webber (4), Liuzzi (2) and Barrichello (1) complete the first top ten drivers after 1 race.
