Team bosses have already held talks about immediate rule changes amid concerns the fans will switch off in their millions if action is not taken immediately.
Hamilton's McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh called for two obligatory stops and immediate talks with tyre supplies Bridgestone to ensure race rubber wears out quicker, encouraging more drama and entertainment. Returning legend Michael Schumacher, sixth on Sunday, was unimpressed with the new formula that promised so much and delivered so little.
"Overtaking is virtually impossible with this formula," the Mercedes star moaned.
But ex-Ferrari ace Gerhard Berger backs the new system, saying it just needs time.
"It was boring but it was the first race and it's too early to make a verdict. I think it will work out," said the Austrian.
Hamilton believes fears that Red Bull's Vettel or Alonso would dominate the year are unfounded.
He said: "It won't be a runaway year for anyone. Fernando won the race but Sebastian easily could have done if he hadn't had problems."
FUEL ON THE FIRE
There may be sound reasons for doing away with re-fuelling but it strips away some of the most heart-pounding moments as well as removing pit-stop intrigue as teams try to out-guess each other. Alternatives include:
Scrap qualifying and make the race grid the reverse order of the previous one. Putting top drivers to the back would give more overtaking and excitement.
Ditch the boring tracks that offer little hope of cars frequently passing each other.
And if all else fails, give the cars a selection of smoke bombs, gun turrets and oil sprays. Well, it worked for Wacky races ...
